The Surroundings

Laren lies in the triangle of the cities Deventer – Zutphen – Lochem and is part of the municipality Lochem since 1971. Although Laren is just a small village, we have all the facilities that you may need; two gyms with sauna and solarium, a church, library, beautician, hairdressers, supermarket, a drugstore, restaurants and cafés. Laren has more than 4,000 inhabitants and its surface is extensive, and in its countryside are still many farms. The pretty scenery with meadows, wooded banks and forests are a feast for the eyes whether you are hiking or biking.

Our ‘dikke boom,’ ‘the thick trea’, is famous. At the castle of Verwolde you will find the thickest oak tree in the Netherlands, with an outline of more than seven and a half meter. The tree is known in the Netherlands, because of the appearance of it in a children’s song by Annie M.G. Schmidt, a well-known writer of children’s books and songs. Also the ‘Fietsvierdaagse:’ a large biking event over four days, attracts thousands of visitors each year.
